US reinforces Syria base in fear of Iranian strikes: Report

Local sources told Syrian state news outlet SANA that a large US convoy of military equipment, logistical supplies, and ammunition was brought into northern Syria on 30 April through the illegal Al-Waleed border-crossing with Iraq.

“A convoy consisting of 40 vehicles, including trucks loaded with logistical materials, military equipment, and ammunition, was brought in by US occupation forces from Iraqi territory through the illegal Al-Walid crossing,” the sources said.

The convoy reportedly crossed the junction of Al-Saeeda village in the Hasakah countryside and headed towards the Kharab al-Jir military airport.

“The convoy was accompanied by military armored vehicles belonging to the occupation forces for its protection,” SANA further said.

This is part of recent US efforts to reinforcetheir occupation bases in the north of Syria – and in Hasakah particularly – given the surge in attacks against Washington’s troops.

The US base in the Kharab al-Jir military airport is where a drone attack resulted in the killing of one US contractor and the injury of several other servicemen on 23 March.

Attacks against US bases — believed to be carried out by groups linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) — have become highly frequent as a response to Washington’s illegal presence in Syria.

While claiming to be in Syria to deter ISIS, US occupation troops are stationed in the country’s resource-rich region. Their occupation has centered around the looting of oil and wheat resources.

In 2019, former US president Donald Trump infamously said: “We’re keeping [Syria’s] oil. We have the oil. The oil is secure. We left troops behind only for the oil.”

Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar reported on 25 March that “there is undeclared Russian-Iranian coordination to escalate against the US presence in Syria, to pressure the US and force it to decide to withdraw from its bases in the north and east of the country.”

As a result, Washington has vowed “harsh attacks” against the IRGC in Syria.
